Description

Below are the images that show the overall progress of this painting from start to finish. Like with many of my paintings, I started painting the canvas with a mixture of gesso and burnt sienna. My ‘Firewater’ painting post explains why, Click here to read it.

Anyway, after doing this I created the under drawing with pencil. I don’t always do it but when I do it’s mostly because I make sure my composition is correct and I don’t have to figure it out or keep adjusting it while I’m painting. I guess I do it more often with bigger and more detailed pieces. To make sure the pencil lines don’t smudge the canvas when I start painting, I spray it with some fixative. This takes about ten minutes to dry (do it outside and use a mask!).

The next step was Painting (Super) Grover. Apart from his pink nose, he consists of several shades of blue (reddish blue and greenish blue), which was fun to work on. Then I continued with Stevie. His skin tones were challenging to paint, but the shirt was the most time consuming. And I did not even paint it smooth and very detailed, but it’s just a lot. First I took care of the shading of the shirt, after which I started adding the pattern on top if it.

At this point I was ready to paint the background. I kept the background quite simple, because I wanted the focus to be on Stevie and Grover. It’s still easy to recognize all the instruments, like the amplifiers and the microphone, but up close they’re really rough. I really enjoyed painting this piece and it brings a smile to my face whenever I look at it.
